On our travels, our SEO Surrey team have met many small and medium-sized business seeking sound online advice, we are frequently asked about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).  What makes SEO work?  How can I get my website up the rankings?

Most people now are aware of the practice of increasing the number of links to their pages in the hope that this will be a silver bullet. Well, it appears that Google themselves are doing away with this opinion and advocating good old-fashioned quality content and copywriting amongst other things.

Google has just last month updated its own Webmaster Help documentation to reflect this.

Previously the advice had read:

“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”

This was changed on May 27th to read:

“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by creating high-quality sites that users will want to use and share.”

This chimes with Google’s own mantra of creating good-quality websites in the first place.  Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s web spam fighting team cites the following when asked “What are the top 3 – 5 SEO areas where webmasters make the most mistakes? “

1) Make sure your website is crawlable – this includes your domain.

2) Include the right words on the page – what are people actually going to type into the search engine?

3) Ensure you have compelling content and marketing

4) Think about the title and description of you more important pages.
